Market update
More ways to trade the stocks you already know
Canada has no shortage of well-known, heavily traded companies. What's easy to miss is that many of them also trade on U.S. exchanges — and for active traders, that distinction matters.
When a stock is dual-listed, you can choose which exchange to trade it on. That means choosing your currency, your market hours, and in some cases, your available strategies. For example, trading the U.S.-listed version of a Canadian company means you can react to news outside of TSX hours — like an after-hours earnings call — without waiting for Canadian markets to open the next morning1. If you’re an options trader, a dual-listed Canadian company allows you to run strategies like a covered call or a cash-secured put to generate a premium on a company you’re bullish on.
What doesn’t change is what you’re trading. The underlying company is the same whether or not it’s a dual-listed stock. All it does is give you more options to consider when deciding how to trade.
We think that flexibility matters — especially for options traders. As the first brokerage in Canada to offer $0 commission fees and option contracts2, we’ve built Wealthsimple for traders who want more ways to approach the market. Dual-listed stocks are one more tool in that mix.
